March BOM - Celebrating Women's History Month with Mu Lan

In honor of Women's History Month, we are pleased to offer The Song of Mu Lan by Jeanne M. Lee.  Although an ancient story, the tale is an excellent vehicle for discussing, and breaking down, gender stereotypes.  The links below offer information pertaining to many famous women, women's history month and the story of Mu Lan.

1. Explore some general resources.  The "Time for Kids Women's History Month" featured web page here.  This page contains information on the history of Women's History Month, a timeline of famous women and online quizzes and games.  The online almanac Factmonster also has a general information page on the subject.  Scholastic also offers a beautiful page with current news about world changing women, women's suffrage, a Harriet Tubman webquest, and more, located here.

2. Meet Young Women Who Changed the World
Another great resource is the National Women's History Museum.  There is also a special feature titled "Young and Brave" about women who changed the world when they were still girls and teenagers.  Teachers can download a middle school lesson plan about this feature here.

3. Meet Women Scientists Who Advanced our Knowledge
Check out the "Women who Advanced Science" page.  It is filled with information about women scientists, an ask a real scientist feature, an interactive timeline and even online games.

4.  Practice research with Scholastic's Women's History Month Cyberhunt.

5. K - 2 Students:  Below are two coloring pages, one from Jeanne M. Lee's book and one from Disney's version of Mu Lan.  How are the characters different?  How are they alike?

6.  Encourage your students to celebrate Women's History Month with these printable bookmarks, courtesy of Gale Resources.
